Found in Slobin’s Beregovski, “Vi hejlik iz di natur” was collected in Kiev in 1932 from a 49-year-old shoe factory worker named A. Bel’skii. From Beregovski’s annotations: “The performer remembers this song from 1895-96 [...] One of the first [Jewish] revolutionary songs from before the founding of the Bund. He noted that he sang it to the melody of ‘Kol’slaven.’” That song, composed by Dmitry Bortniansky, was considered the de facto anthem of the Tsarist Russian Empire from 1796-1816.
lyrics
Vi heylik iz di natur,

How holy is nature
How free is her spirit
Truth is her jewel
And love her crown
We stand and we lay on our hearts our hands
And now do we truly swear
In life and in death like a wall to stand
And the sword of truth to bear
And if one of our rank is too weak to fight
From the poison of capital,
It is strong as the serpent's bite,
Then with truth and love united,
Our bond is like a great iron wall
And in our hearts is a fire ignited
A fire of freedom for one and all.
Our blood is calling for revenge
From blood comes all we must defend
They've stolen their riches from our bones
And we end up trampled like stones
Brothers and sisters take each other's hands
And come to the fire which burns and brands
We are the proletariat!
That means: "the people who work!”
Our iron chains will be broken,
We'll free ourselves from our yoke and
Cry: “workers, march on, march on, march on!”

One of my favourite musical discoveries in a while. These musicians are seriously talented. I can’t help imagining that there would have been a whole significant subculture of Yiddish psych rock like this in a different, kinder universe. For now, this is a window into that world that might have been. And I love every second of it. Audrey

Jaunty songs in Yiddish infused with anti-Nazi sentiment. An amazing artifact, rescued from obscurity.
Bought the CD so I could have access to the lyrics and the notes about the album. An inspiring achievement, beautifully executed. J. Taliaferro
