A comedic fusion of two 20 century schlagers - “Sugar Bush” (the Doris Day and Frankie Laine’s performance of which was viral in the USSR of 60-70’s due to the popular vinyl record series Vokrug Sveta / Around The World) and tango-foxtrot “U Samovara” (a “light music” hit by Polish-Soviet-Jewish composer Fanny Gordon a.k.a. Faina Kwiatkowska/Kvyatkovskaya, Faiga Jofé, interpreted by prominent artists such as “King of Russian Tango” Pyotr Leshchenko and Soviet jazz patriarch Leonid Utyosov). New lyrics playfully refer to famous Soviet dissident scientist Andrey Sakharov (whose last name is derived from the Russian word for sugar) sharing an internal exile with his wife Yelena Bonner, also a political activist. Sakharov’s exile (1980 - 1986) is an important milestone in the history of Brezhnev era, late-Soviet political dissent and the cold war.
lyrics
Hell, no! We won’t go!
Hell, no! We won’t go!
Oh, we never not gonna go home
We won't go, we won't go
Oh, we never not gonna go home
'Cause KGB’s at home.
Oh, sugarbush, I love you so
I will never let you go
So, don't you let them others know
Sugarbush, I love you so
Sugarbush, what can I do
Brezhnev’s not so pleased with you
Promise me you will be true
I'll go to the exile with you!
Sugarbush, come dance with me
And let the other fellas be
Just dance the polka merrily
Sugarbush, come dance with me
Oh, we never not gonna go home
We won't go, we won't go
Oh, we never not gonna go…
[At the samovar, I and my Lyusya,
And it’s already dark in the yard.
And in a samovar, tea is boiling, I'm angry,
The secret police is knocking at our window.
Lucy pours me tea
And her gaze promises freedom!..
At the samovar, I and my Lyusya,
We will drink some tea until morning.)
